Advent & Marriage: Ways to keep Advent sacred together

When we really think about it, Advent and marriage have so many connections.

In marriage, our goal is to get each other to heaven. Plus our relationship with our spouse is supposed to be a foretaste of heaven!

In Advent, we’re preparing not only for the birth of Jesus, we’re preparing for when he comes again. It’s a reminder that we need to be ready! We want to be with him in heaven.

So it makes sense that we should want to keep Advent sacred as a married couple. Here are ways you can do that:

1. Commit to a spiritual practice together.

  • Been wanting to start praying a Rosary as a couple? Advent is a great time to start.
  • Attend an extra Mass together during the week.
  • Pray an hour from the Liturgy of the Hours each day.

2. Read a book together.

  • It could be a marriage book or a spiritual book. Read a chapter and then discuss! For suggestions of marriage books, check out our Recommendations page. We also have A Journey Through Advent for Catholic Couples, which includes weekly reflections and discussion questions (and more).
  • A book of the Bible counts as a book! Reading through one of the Gospels together leading up to Christmas is a simple but beautiful way to connect in a faithful way.

3. Limit screen time.

  • Normally watch TV every night together? Try to limit it to once or twice a week.
  • Put your phones aside when you’re together for a designated time each day.

Doing both of those will give you plenty of time to do any of the previous suggestions!

4. Don’t feel like you have to attend every party.

Seriously. It’s okay to politely decline an invitation, especially if you’re already feeling overwhelmed. December is a crazy time, and if saying yes to every single event will leave you frazzled and forgetful of what Advent is all about…just say no. Keep each other accountable to this!

5. Go to Confession.

We try to go every month, and that’s especially important during Advent and Lent! Make this a priority. Receiving this sacrament regularly has literally changed our marriage! (And if things start spiraling, it’s usually because one of us hasn’t been recently.)

6. Decide on which traditions to do this year, and shelf the rest.

Really, it’s okay. A few  years ago, Logan suggested we not take out our Jesse Tree (after struggling with it the previous two years), and I realized that he was right. We brought it back the following year, and it went much smoother. Not every tradition will be right for your family every year—especially if you’re in a difficult phase with pregnancy, a baby, illness, or any other number of scenarios. Do what what works best for your family this year. But make sure you decide on that together!

7. Focus on the small things.

We tend to have high expectations of doing these fancy and elaborate traditions during December. But so often, it’s the little things that we remember. So focus on those—taking a few minutes to sit together listening to music, saying a prayer together as you light the Advent wreath, etc. We created a challenge calendar to help you focus on the small things, while keeping your marriage and Advent a priority. Check out the details here!

The important thing is that you keep Advent in Advent. Let’s keep Jesus at the center of this season. Christmas will come, and then you can celebrate!

Advent & Christmas Challenge for Catholic Marriages {2023}

October 2024 Update: See our 2024 challenge here!

It’s hard to believe that this is the fifth year we’re offering a marriage challenge during Advent! We started this as a simple way to keep our marriage a priority during one of the busiest times of the year. It really has served as a great reminder to 1) remember that we are preparing for Jesus’s coming at Christmas and when He comes again, and 2) that the little things in marriage really do make a big difference.

The link between marriage and Advent

Since marriage and Advent have a special link (in that both point us towards Heaven), we have found that Advent can be such a beautiful time if we use this season to draw closer to each other, to foster our relationship together, and to remind each other of the end goal—eternal life in heaven.

As always, this challenge includes both a calendar with a simple challenge each day, as well as a guide that gives you some ideas on how to complete each challenge.

New this year: Christmas challenges!

When we really focus on Advent and the meaning of the season, it makes Christmas even more special and celebratory. For years, our family has loved celebrating the Christmas season by doing at least one special thing each day of Christmas. So we thought it’d be fun to include marriage challenges for the Christmas season as well, especially since this year Advent is the shortest it can possibly be. The Christmas challenges are more fun, because it’s a time to celebrate, and we want couples to have fun together!

We’ve included a blank calendar (as usual) for you to use instead if you’d like, to write in your own challenges. It’s also a great way to keep track of everything going on — feel free to use it for the challenge on the first day of Advent, “Make an Advent plan.”

But if you’re not really feeling the daily challenge, check out our new Journey Through Advent for Catholic Couples, where we provide a weekly date night!

If you’re ready for the Advent and Christmas challenge, though, the calendar and guide is available in our shop! Add it to your cart by clicking the button below (or click here if it’s not showing up)…

A Journey Through Advent for Catholic Couples

Over the years, we’ve offered Advent devotionals and Advent challenges for couples, and this year, we wanted to try something new!

A Journey Through Advent for Catholic Couples provides a weekly date night with suggested Scripture passages, a reflection, discussions questions, a prayer, and activities to do together. It’s like an Advent devotional and marriage challenge all in one!

Advent can be a beautiful season for married couples

Advent has always been one of our favorite times of the year. Yes, it can be crazy and stressful, but if we truly treat it as a time of preparation (for Christmas AND for eternity), it can be a beautiful season. Since Advent and marriage have a special link, in that they both point us toward heaven, we wanted to provide a fun and fulfilling way to spend time together as husband and wife during Advent.

What makes it even better is that it is not specific to any year, so you can revisit it every Advent. Each Advent, you will have a built-in way to spend dedicated time together as husband and wife. We provide a date night plan, so to speak, so all you need to do is make it happen!

A rundown of our weekly date night

We encourage you to use our date night suggestions merely as a guide and to make any changes that work best for your marriage. We go into more detail in the PDF, but here’s the brief rundown of what you can do each week:

  1. Light your Advent wreath.
  2. Look up the Scripture passage in your Bible and read it together.
  3. Read the reflection and then discuss the questions.
  4. Say the prayer together.
  5. Then have fun by doing one (or more) of the suggested activities together.

By incorporating a weekly date night at home during Advent, it is our hope that you grow closer together as husband and wife as we await our Lord’s coming. We pray this is a blessing for your marriage this Advent!
